this brought two things to mind as I read it: Bernard Shaw’s Man and Superman where all the frivolous people prefer hell because there are no mirrors and they are not troubled with reality; and a memory of a Tex Mex (NOT Mexican, Tex Mex) restaurant/bar near Jumira Beach in Dubai where the doorman was a tiny Indian man dressed like a Federale with a red sash… and I got the slightest peek into what a real Irishman must feel like on St Patrick’s Day in a foreign city. It was like a distorted mirror where I could just make out the vague basis in reality. Shudders…

Should I read Man and Superman? Shaw has a cafe here at LSE. Can't escape the guy!

Interesting. A robust and salt of the earth type “gammon” friend recently told me about the uptick in church attendance by Gen Z (“the kids”, in his argot). His take on it was that it has been triggered by the relatively recent prominence of a religion in these islands which is completely alien and hostile to our conservative and liberal traditions - “our way of life”.

In Dante's depiction the punishments are tailored to the specific habitual sin of the person. I'm just curious as to the sin that would be the sin punished by the Irish pub.

It was always going to happen. We live in a vacuous, shallow society inhabited by godless, vacuous, shallow folk. Everyone is subconsciously searching for something to fill the void within that Christians believe only the love of Jesus can heal. So, it was only a matter of time. Plus, it is likely to be this generations way of shocking their parents....

It's a breadcake, obviously 🙄

According to the Church, Hell is eternity without God, where those who have refused to know God in life no longer have that choice to make. I believe that what you described comes as a very close second.

I must say, however, t'is a fuckin' barmcake*.

*unless it's a stottie or a morning roll.

A stottie. Four foot snake!

I'm no expert, but I think a snake with four feet is called a skink. Not to be confused with Cullen skink, which goes beautifully with a morning roll...

No need to enter ye local oirish tavern to experience Dante. Nor yet to go to oibitha. Just open any source of so-called news are voilà! Here we have the flabby complacent fuhrer, issuing diktats about how our would be annihilators are to be treated by us. We shall give thrm board and lodgings, mobile phones. We shall bypass the pedophilia and misogyny.

We shall encourage them to use our churches, our school, our hospitals at no expense.

We shall allow them to work illegally, to enter illegally and to rape and pillage our women, our communities and our country with impunity.

We shall bow to their narcissistic neuroses. Our sport shall be self flagellation and our prayer shall be "Mea Culpa".

The final ring of hell, betrayal, has already been effected by aforesaud flabby fuhrer.

Welcome to the ununited kingdom of hades.
