I was in the car with my 17 year old (who was armed with a bag of cans and a ticket to Wembley) when we heard the headlines about little Rishi Sunak’s national service idea. His reaction? “They can fuck off” Never been prouder.
I was in my car with my twelve-year-old and her language on hearing the news was much the same. I could hardly admonish her! It won't happen, I said - it's the last thrashings of a dying government. Still, what should cause alarm is what it says of the political climate that it even occurred to a political party to float the idea. And - given the routine derangement of Westminster - I wouldn't put it past the Starmerites to concoct their own modified version, under the pretext of public service, at some time in the years to come.
Your suggestion of life experience combined with a mission to study how others do things better is exactly what every 18 year old needs. They will get into enough trouble and meet enough fringe types to round out an unforgettable two years.
As for the weather, look up the gentleman at Harvard in charge of geoengineering. While he does make some eye opening statements, I’m sure he could find some way to move your storms to a country of your choosing.
What an entertaining and incisive read. Thanks. Will watch out for more.
Thank you, Neil. Another one in the breech...
