A Modest Proposal indeed! Thanks for getting me to laugh after yet another horrendous news week. I couldn't agree more with P. Morse in the brilliance of your opening few lines, and loved your weaving some yiddish into the prose.

"The desperate state of modern Britain resembles a nebbish man forced to narrate each thrust of his expressive wife’s ‘open relationship.’ Our collective self-despair plays out on the news—a languorous suicide note recited in nightly instalments."

I can't think of ba better passage read recently about Britian. It was a good run, we'll miss you.

Sounds good if you can convince them to reproduce. I don't think they're doing enough of that right now.

Well, Swift you are not, but I did smile a lot. Proportional representation seems to foster more consensus politics though, by definition, doesn’t it?

I live near a reasonably pleasant enclave called West Acton, the home of the only fulltime Japanese school in London. I've taught several hundred of them English and they're delightful, intelligent, perceptive and as unlike what one has come to expect from Brits and the ubiquitous uninvited as Stilton is from fromage frais. In time no doubt they'll abandon all hope and return to Tokyo with a vast number of horrendous anecdotes to put their countrymen off the idea of even visiting let alone living here. If you can call it living....?

I could not wish on the Japanese the fate of emigrating to Britain. On a recent trip to Japan a young lady expressed to us her ardent desire to visit “Engrand”. Horrified, I wanted to warn her urgently to look elsewhere for a pleasant holiday experience, but it seemed impolite to embark on a rant. Not wanting to shatter her charming illusions we wished her well and made good our escape.

Lol. As you know I'm a student of the beautiful violence that is karate. Our sensei has just returned from one of his twice yearly trips to headquarters in Tokyo to train. The instructors there can't understand why there are "fat black belts" in Europe. "That is not black belt". In Japan its highly unusual to see fat people and they are fat shamed. You are weighed and measured - at work. Sensei's friend Henry had put on a few pounds and was "not looking forward to his assessment at work.....". Perhaps it's an approach that should be adopted here. "You're too fat. Lose weight or you lose your job".

I'm not looking forward to smoking in pubs returning, I'm asthmatic, but Farage PM can't bloody come soon enough 🤣

You're right of course, except for the unfortunate ( ?)fact that the lazy slobby flabby blubber quietly quitting every day instead of doing anything one might call "work" would simply take their "employers" to the cleaners, added and abetted by their legal chums.
