I really like the point you made here because I feel like we say a lot that phones are bad because they're ruining our attention spans, but we don't talk as much about how they also change what we're actually paying attention to, which matters just as much
I am convinced in my occasional nod toward a General Theory of Everything that all developments in visual arts and their distribution from (at least) the cave paintings onward have had at root the production and dissemination of porn. Fear (or hope) not that the end state has been reached; the orgasmoelectrodes (at least) are on the way.
And:
You (and all others who ruminate in like manner) claim, "In a decade or two, social historians will charge these devilish devices with infantilising culture, stoking mindless tribalism, and degrading us into hypnotised dopamine junkies." I always wonder, from whence will come those historians?
Sharing this article with my family. My daughter teaches reading and writing to middle schoolers (13 yo). The prevalence of functional illiteracy in current society is frightening. No one reads books anymore. This fact alone portends the end of our civilization.
The irony of downloading an app....to wean you off your phone 🤪🤣 Yeah I need to stop spending so much time on here, its school hols but eldest is in the throes of GCSE revision. Tbf I've learned a fair bit about the Weimar Republic and the rise of Hitler this week. I do read, a lot, to the annoyance of my hubs who would prefer it if we "watch something together" but other than Strike and the odd comedian our tastes are not shared. So back to my book I go....
Spot on. At the risk of sounding like the cranky neighbor telling the kids to get off the lawn, we should ban TikTok and its ilk before it's too late. Or maybe it is too late. But this latest offering provides some nourishment to this reader starving for something more fulfilling than a few Doritos. (Although a Dorito now and then aint so bad either!) I just bought you a pint!
👏👏👏

Two thoughts:
