Stellar stuff (I quite enjoy the odd Stellar Artwat as hubs calls it). It really is that simple. As a true born Yorkshire lass, I'm not a snob and I love Spoons. My kids have eaten in several, one in Nottingham the name of which I forget, the branch in Truro Ty An Dowr, Penzance one (it'll come to me....) The Buck in Northallerton is lovely, The Angel in Whitby and of course our home branch, The Winter Gardens with the famous staircase. Most often though its the York branch, Postern Gate, when we go for a day out in the school hols. I have been known to eschew the free coffee for a Thatchers alcohol free cider (gorgeous). You can get a glass of prosecco for under 6 quid, a rarity these days. And it's drinkable.
I've been to my fare share of faaanccy pubs too - but we don't stay for long. Clint won't like the beer, they won't have a gin I can drink and if there's no Guiness hubs is unhappy. Vicki likes a Rose. Simple tastes, but must be catered for. The best two pubs by us are The Mucky Duck - amaaazing food, fantastic drinks, not too dear. Its in a not great part of town but its thriving. Fat Badger - fabulous pub food, a bit more than that, but the drinks are a bit dear (in a very nice part of town). Again, it's thriving. The government could help by slashing VAT. Would cheer us all up in a heartbeat.
Oh dude! Blessed be thy words.May they unchain the heart of Britannia. The betrayal by the leadership signals tumultious times ahead , surely a struggle shall ensue. May the spirit of the Lionheart prevail.
Sad to read this and learn of the demise of the English pub, at least the ones I recall from my wanderings in the Hertfordshire countryside in the 1980's. My first taste of bitters and some memorable evenings being asked to leave, usually after last call but not always. Those were the days.
The scientific term for insensitive and ineffective movement is Brownian motion, usually seen in amoebae. Seems fitting for your average modern politician, Brit or American.
