In 1979, sensing an outbreak of mad-hatter ideas, follies and fancies, British scientists captured the last wisps of an elixir known as ‘common sense’ and concealed that beguiling compound in a glass vial. They buried it in a secret laboratory burrowed in the bowels of London.

This week, that vial cracked open. For the first time in decades, Great Britain is enduring her first outbreak of common sense.
